Mōhoihoi – Who we are

Poipoia te kākano kia puāwai – nurture the seed so it will bloom

MySkill has adopted this whakatauki as we’re a team that has been nutured to grow from small beginnings. It also reflects the potential we see in people: whether they be our team members, the learners we work with, or the people they support in the community.

MySkill has grown from WellCare, a small Nelson based training team that was started in 1989. Jill Kersey lead this team of people who were passionate about support workers and their role in helping the elderly in the Nelson region.

WellCare came under the umbrella of NZ Health Group in 2005. Anita Guthrie brought her energy and ideas to the leadership role in 2011 and the name MySkill was introduced in 2019. The team grew to provide all support worker training for NZ Health Group, as well as training for some NZ Health Group partners and other health and disability providers.

The challenges of COVID led to a shift away from workshops towards greater use of eLearning. Pay equity legislation and the updated sector standards have kept us light on our feet and responsive to the changing needs of the workforce. Today, we’re a diverse team supporting organisations and learners throughout the motu. We share a passion for people and the ability to find the fun in our mahi – much like the team of 1989.
