Kaiāwhina-Led Non-Complex Support Plan Review

MySkill and NZ Health Group have collaborated with Te Puna Ora O Mataatua and Te Whatu Ora to launch this new NZQA Level 3 micro-credential of consisting of 3 credits. This qualification enables kaiāwhina / support workers to complete non-complex support plan reviews for people aged 65+ living in the community.

The training is available now – contact [email protected] to enrol learners or to find more information.

Who is the training for?

The training is for experienced kaiāwhina: it enables them to grow their skills and to gain meaningful diversity in their role. As well as enhancing their role, the training provides kaiāwhina with a valued qualification and career pathway.

How does it benefit your organisation?

Enhancing the role of your kaiāwhina allows your Registered Nurses to focus on more complex nursing – this is a better use of their skills and your nursing resource. Your organisation will also benefit from experienced kaiāwhina feeling more valued and engaged, and the chance to boost retention by giving individuals a development pathway within the organisation.

What is the structure of the training?

The training is made up of:

  • Five engaging eLearning modules
  • One live webinar with a senior nurse educator

Note: your Registered Nurses are required to sign-off on kaiāwhina competency and provide ongoing monitoring and support.

What are the learning outcomes?

By the end of the training programme learners will be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective communication strategies, including whakawhanaungatanga to gain insight into a person’s needs during the non-complex review process, documenting these needs in the support plan, and communicating service allocation outcomes to the person and/or their whanau.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of risk and escalation procedures whilst working within their scope of practice.
  • Utilise SMART goals to complete non-complex support plan reviews, underpinned by Mātauranga Māori, Te Ao Māori, Te Whare Tapa Whā and Whānau knowledge

Who developed the training?

The training was developed, and will be delivered by, MySkill’s Clinical Training Manager. The development of the training was supported by the Director of Nursing and the Equity team from NZ Health Group.

Cultural support was provided by Te Puna Ora o Mataatua – a kaupapa Māori health provider based in Whakatāne and supporting whānau across the Bay of Plenty. This partnership ensures a bicultural lens and the use of the Te Whare Tapa Whā model throughout the content.
