Now available: training for wheelchair & disability equipment technicians

wheelchair and disability technician

To answer the increasing demand for wheelchair and disability technicians, My Skill has partnered with USA based company ATLAS-FIOS, to provide courses for online wheelchair and disability equipment technician training.

Ensuring that disabled people are receiving quality equipment repairs and adjustments, these courses will ensure standardised technician training across Aotearoa New Zealand, Australia, and the wider Asia-Pacific, and promote industry best practice within the sector.

The ATLAS-FIOS Level 1 and Level 2 online training and theory exams meet the accelerated learning requirements of the DMERT (Durable Medical Equipment Repair Technician) Group, which is the recognised standards organisation for technicians across the USA and Canada.

This eLearning will be hosted by MySkill and provides foundational training across a range of wheelchair and disability equipment types. If required, the training can then be supplemented by manufacturer specific support. It’s a great way for existing technicians, and those looking to find work in the industry, to upskill at their own pace and to work around their own busy schedules.

The Level 1 content covers repairs and adjustments to standard wheelchairs and basic disability equipment, while Level 2 covers seating and positioning, and complex rehabilitation equipment from high end manual wheelchairs to power seating and electronics platforms.

Once technicians have successfully completed the course, they will receive a certificate of completion which then allows them an opportunity to apply for the optional DMERT Group technician certification.

In Aotearoa New Zealand, Seating To Go, Enable New Zealand, Accessible, and ATSNZ have collaborated to ensure future provision of the practical exam requirement for the DMERT Group certification can be undertaken during events such as Show Your Ability, ATSNZ expos, the Oceania Seating Symposium and Enable and Accessible sub-contractor meetings. This is a great example of organisations working together to build capacity and best practice across the sector.

The ATLAS-FIOS online technician training course hosted by My Skill is a fantastic option for employers who are looking to upskill and support their staff to meet sector best practice and to demonstrate a commitment to quality improvement.
